Use a hand
sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is a
liquid or gel that is commonly used to reduce hand infections. Alcohol-based
formulations are preferable to soap and water Handwash in most healthcare
settings. It is generally more effective in killing microorganisms and is
better tolerated than soap and water. Hand washing should always be done when
contamination is evident or when using the toilet and other uses. The general
use of the alcohol-free versions does not contain any recommendations. In
addition to health care, hand washing is generally preferred. They are also
less effective for Norovirus and Clostridium difficile micro-organisms. They
are generally available in the form of liquids, gels, and foams.
Alcohol-based
versions generally contain a combination of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl
alcohol), or n-propanol. The versions with 60 to 95% alcohol are the most
effective. Caution is recommended as they are flammable. Alcohol-based hand
sanitizers work against a wide range of microorganisms, but not against spores.
Some versions contain compounds such as glycerin to prevent the skin from
drying out. The non-alcoholic versions may contain benzalkonium chloride or
triclosan.
